WHAT ARE ORAL LESIONS?

An oral lesion is an ulcer that occurs on the mucous membrane of the oral cavity. The most common causes of oral lesions are localised trauma (i.e. rubbing from a sharp edge on a broken filling).

• Hypersensitivity to acidic food

Oral lesions may form individually or multiple lesions may appear at the same time. Once formed, it may be maintained by inflammation and/or secondary infection. Rarely, an oral lesion that does not heal may be a sign of oral cancer. It is important that you check with your medical and/or dental professional if your oral lesion does not heal.
